Unfortunately, there will not be a HurleyCon in 2012

Hi folks,

Yes, you read that correctly. We’re very sorry to have to make this announcement, but there will not be a HurleyCon this year. Due to the immense number of comic book and gaming conventions all around the country in the early spring, we were simply not able to find a date that would work.

Rather than run a sub-par show that didn’t include the wide variety of industry guests and independent dealers that you’ve come to expect from HurleyCon, we’ve decided to rally our forces for a bigger, better show in the future.

If you’re still on the hunt for a great comic book show in the area, we highly recommend Planet Comicon in Overland Park, KS (Kansas City Area). It’s easily the area’s biggest con, and always has a great guest list.

Thank you all for your continued support.

Major Announcement As We Restructure And Relocate

Over the next few months, Hurley’s Heroes will be undergoing quite a few changes. We will be streamlining our current business in a number of ways. In addition to changes such as reducing our shelf stock of graphic novels, shrinking our Magic: the Gathering singles collection, and eliminating shelf copies of new comics, by far our most significant change will be to move the store operations to a new location in September.

We realize that this news is shocking and that you may have a few questions. The question that we expect to hear the most is “Why?”. The simple answer is the tornado on May 22nd. We sell non-essential goods, and the city of Joplin as a whole is more concerned with the essentials. We hope that in time the city will regrow, and we will be working tirelessly to regrow with it.

We will be refocusing all of our new comic sales to a special order only system. If you’re already part of our subscription system, great! You’re covered. If you’re not a subscriber, well, you totally should be. It’s fast, easy, and FREE.

Our Magic: The Gathering customers should be aware that we will not be carrying any product for the 2012 core set. Because of the window we are required to order within, this means we will also be canceling our Pre-Release and Launch Party events. However, we will still have gaming space available, and all other scheduled events will be held as normal. In addition, all of our packs, boxes, and single cards will be available.

Warhammer 40,000 customers will be happy to know that we are keeping our retailer account and will remain the fastest and most reliable place to order miniatures. The league will be ending as of the 15th of this month per normal, and we will be scheduling a 1,000 point tournament in August.

We can’t begin to express how grateful we are for your support. We will continue to serve all of our customers as best we can in the future. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us.

As was revealed last night in Brad’s Beat on the KSN evening news, we will be giving away comics this weekend to anyone in the Joplin area that wants to come by. We especially want to reach out to all of those affected by the tornado.

The comics being given away are those that were donated by hundreds of generous people from around the nation, and in fact, the entire globe. Comics Express – A Benefit Comic For Kids In Joplin

Some awesome folks are putting together a comic and activity book to benefit kids here in the Joplin area that were affected by the tornado called “Comics Express”. We’ve been asked to help spread the word about this book, and how you can help. Just head to http://www.indiegogo.com/comicsexpress and you can donate money to help fund the production of the book.

$20 gets you your own copy of the book, and makes sure that it gets into the hands of 16 kids here in Joplin. If you want to give more, then that’s great there are several donation levels, and gifts associated with all of them, up to and including signed books, and even original art!

The award-winning comic artists in Comics Express include:

Corey Barba – Yam
Chris Duffy – Bizarro Comics
Ellen Forney – I Love Led Zeppelin; I Was Seven in ’75
Felipe Galindo (Feggo) – Manhatitlan; cartoonist for The New Yorker
Caitlin Keegan – illustrator of Shakespeare’s Love Sonnets
Alec Longstreth – Phase 7
Mark Martin – Gnatrat
Dan Moynihan – Heeby Jeeby Comix
Travis Nichols – The Monster Doodle Book
Dave Roman – Astronaut Academy: Zero Gravity; Teen Boat
Johnny Ryan – Angry Youth Comix; Prison Pit
Karen Sneider – cartoonist for The New Yorker
Raina Telgemeier – Smile; The Baby-Sitters Club

If you can, please help out this amazing cause.

Thanks,
Jason and Nathan

We Have Been Overwhelmed With Generosity

All of the love, support, and generosity shown by the comics community has been truly appreciated. However, due to the overwhelming response we’ve had to our Comics for Kids campaign, we have been completely swamped with comic books. We may, in fact, have more comics at this point than we will be able to distribute. Not only have we been somewhat overwhelmed here at the store, the city as a whole has been inundated with supplies. Due to this overabundance of generosity, we have to ask that any more comic donations be put on hiatus. In the near future, should we find a need for more books, we will definitely let you all know. In the mean time, if you still want to donate to relief efforts here in Joplin, you’re best bet is making monetary donations. We recommend United Way. Again, thank you all for your generosity.

All Ages Comics For Joplin Tornado Relief

This is a call to publishers, distributors, stores, anyone who has all ages books they would like to donate.

My name is Jason A. Hurley, my brother and I own a comic shop called Hurley’s Heroes in Joplin, Missouri. This last weekend, Joplin was hit by a deadly tornado that wiped out a huge chunk of town. Several hundred, perhaps even thousands, of families were put out of their homes. Now, hundreds of children are stuck inside huge shelters, and no doubt bored out of their minds. We’ve taken a few books from the store to a shelter nearby, and they were greatly appreciated. I’ve been inspired, and I want to make this effort bigger.

I have plenty of people, mostly my loyal customers, willing to distribute these books far and wide to the various shelters around town. Now, I need books to distribute. If anyone out there has all ages comics that they would be willing to donate to this cause, you can just send them to me, and I’ll get them out to the shelters.
