This is a call to publishers, distributors, stores, anyone who has all ages books they would like to donate.
My name is Jason A. Hurley, my brother and I own a comic shop called Hurley’s Heroes in Joplin, Missouri. This last weekend, Joplin was hit by a deadly tornado that wiped out a huge chunk of town. Several hundred, perhaps even thousands, of families were put out of their homes. Now, hundreds of children are stuck inside huge shelters, and no doubt bored out of their minds. We’ve taken a few books from the store to a shelter nearby, and they were greatly appreciated. I’ve been inspired, and I want to make this effort bigger.
I have plenty of people, mostly my loyal customers, willing to distribute these books far and wide to the various shelters around town. Now, I need books to distribute. If anyone out there has all ages comics that they would be willing to donate to this cause, you can just send them to me, and I’ll get them out to the shelters.

That’s great, Das. Thanks so much!
My pleasure. I’ve wanted to do something since hearing the news, and I’m always a bit afraid to send money, especially with so much fraud after disasters these days. This is the least I could do, and I think it’s really a fantastic idea! Best to you!

I just put a box of 50 +/- late 90’s comics in the mail to you.
Do you need any books for the 4 to 8 age group? I sell estates on ebay and have a few left over.
Thanks for your efforts and good luck to you all.
Absolutely! The younger the kids are, the more likely they’re bored out of their minds in those shelters. If you’ve got books aimed at a younger crowd, we’d love to get them in those kids’ hands.
thats realy nice
I cant bileve this happend to us
I would love to donate. I literally have close to 1ooo comics. The shipping would cost a small fortune though. Any suggestions on how to circumvent that cost e-mail me @ jameshalcomb@yahoo.com and I will get them to you ASAP.
The shipping is the main problem we’ve run into. Comics way a ton. Your best bet is probably shipping them USPS Media Rate, or asking UPS of Fed Ex if they have any sort of special disaster relief rate (I honestly don’t know if there even is such a thing)

This just went green on Fark.com. You’re going to get a lot of comics.
Wow… That’s amazing. I can’t wait!

I’ll donate. Tell me what you need.
Thanks, Kevin. The main thing we need is the books. All ages comics. Something I can confidently hand to any kid of any age and know that it’s appropriate. Any books in any amount help.
I don’t have any comics I can donate. Do you have a Chip-In or somewhere else I can donate a few bucks?
We appreciate your generosity, but encourage you to give to http://www.uwheartmo.org/ Comics we can handle, but they’re far better equipped to deal with monetary donations than us.
I be send some comic out as soon as I can I all post what you where doing to see if anybody else would be willing to help out those kids deserved them
Thanks, James!
Sorry for my spelling it not the best but here link where I was talking about so far 1 person send you package http://www.comiccollectorlive.com/forum/default.aspx?g=posts&t=32036
Thanks again, James. I love how much people are trying to get the word out to the comic community for us. The outpouring of generosity has been amazing!
Hey Hurley’s Heroes!
I have a shop in the SF Bay Area and will be getting a few boxes (of all ages comics) together for you this weekend!
You are doing a great thing and I am very happy to help with this!
Best regards,
Alex
Excellent. I love seeing other shops get into this as well. Comics has such a great community surrounding it.
this is so great guys. i’ve managed to get my local shop, borderlands, in greenville, sc to help out. expect something from them in the next week or so.
Thanks, Tom!
God will bless u for all your doing my wife and I are headed to joplin with a trailer full of water and work gloves. Wondering if us need some at your store/shelter. We will be in town saturday morning. Just let me know. God bless
Thanks! We’re really well stocked for the moment, but there are plenty of places around town that do need stuff though.
Hi –
Such a great idea that I am collecting comics and comic based colouring books to send over from Brisbane Australia. Will send via a friend in Kansas to ensure that they get to shelters that most need them. We had our fair share of natural disasters in Queensland this year, but nothing like what you are going through.
Good luck to you all xxx
Wow, Australia, that’s amazing! Thanks so much!
I’ve been looking for a place to donate three long boxes of comics I’ve had sitting around, and this is perfect. I know they’ll go to good use. I’m going to get them out in the week ahead.
Wow! That’s awesome!
Just wanted to tell you guys how awesome you are! I saw this on Fark, I wish I had something to donate :_; I’m posting this everywhere, tho, trying to get this more attention. Please take care of you and yours and know that you guys are my heroes!
Thanks so much. I know I’ve said this a million times already, but I really am in awe at how much people are getting behind this project. It’s really, really great.
Consider it done. I am sending a few Johnny DC books your way. Best of luck to all of you.
Thank you. They are truly appreciated.
hey Jason! Great thing you are doing here!! I have some print copies left over of my comic that I’ll be sending you this week. Don’t know how many I have yet, but they are definitely all ages. I’ll also blog and tweet about this later today.
thanks for what you are doing! 😀
Sweet! Thanks for the books, and for spreading the word!

Hey, how’s ‘comic relief’ going? Get any books in this weekend?
das
Hey, Das.
So far we’ve received a couple of boxes from Missouri and New Jersey. Also, a local comic dealer brought in 3 long boxes of books. We’re going to start into the distribution side of things today.
Since tomorrows a holiday, the post won’t be running. Come Tuesday though, I’ve got a feeling we’re going to get tons of books.
Thanks to everyone who has sent books or support, and keep ’em coming. We’ll make sure that every book we receive makes it into the hands of someone who needs it.
I hope you’ll be able to share some stories with us about the distribution…would love to hear how it all works out! IF parents are okay with it, a few pictures of the kids receiving the books would be great, too. Any local news agencies following this? Someone should – just seems like a good story to cover.
My best to you all!
das
Hey, I got probably a dumb question for ya, I was just wondering if things like Green Arrow would be kid friendly enough? It seems fine, but I just wanted to make sure. Thanks!
We’ve gotten enough response that we’ll be dividing the books up into age brackets before we take them to the shelters. Something like Green Arrow probably is safe for all ages, but it may go into the “Teen Friendly” pile, just to be safe. Thanks.
Will be sending 80 books of The Lunar Antics comic books Tuesday from the warehouse in Ohio. They are absolutely suitable for all ages–although older people who have life experience will see more irony! Hope this helps to relieve the boredom in the shelters.
I hope I can give back a little to this wonderful country of what I received when my city was attacked in September of 2001.
Best wishes,

Hi
I am a Chinese guy in Arkansas. Feel sorry for the people from Joplin, especially for the kids there.
I got twenty comic books or so. Most of them are Naruto’s from it series (Not the whole). They are in very good conditions. Is it fine to send them to you?
Thanks and God bless all the people there and the people to work helping them.
Mailed today anyway. You should receive the package by this Thursday.
Do you accept all books? or just comics?
Just mailed a package of children’s books, you should receive them by Thursday!
Howdy! Just found out about this today. Are you still accepting comics to be sent in?
Mailed about 40lbs of comics I’ve been collecting and moving around over the last twenty years or so. I hope you can make use of them.
Hi there! I have 50 copies of Heeby Jeeby Comix (for kids—definitely all ages) to donate—issues #1 and #2. I can almost guarantee they will put a smile on their faces 🙂 So sorry to hear of everyone’s losses. I would love to help.
