All Ages Comics For Joplin Tornado Relief

This is a call to publishers, distributors, stores, anyone who has all ages books they would like to donate.

My name is Jason A. Hurley, my brother and I own a comic shop called Hurley’s Heroes in Joplin, Missouri. This last weekend, Joplin was hit by a deadly tornado that wiped out a huge chunk of town. Several hundred, perhaps even thousands, of families were put out of their homes. Now, hundreds of children are stuck inside huge shelters, and no doubt bored out of their minds. We’ve taken a few books from the store to a shelter nearby, and they were greatly appreciated. I’ve been inspired, and I want to make this effort bigger.

I have plenty of people, mostly my loyal customers, willing to distribute these books far and wide to the various shelters around town. Now, I need books to distribute. If anyone out there has all ages comics that they would be willing to donate to this cause, you can just send them to me, and I’ll get them out to the shelters.

    • That’s great, Das. Thanks so much!

My pleasure. I’ve wanted to do something since hearing the news, and I’m always a bit afraid to send money, especially with so much fraud after disasters these days. This is the least I could do, and I think it’s really a fantastic idea! Best to you!

I just put a box of 50 +/- late 90’s comics in the mail to you.

Do you need any books for the 4 to 8 age group? I sell estates on ebay and have a few left over.

Thanks for your efforts and good luck to you all.

  3. James Halcomb says:

I would love to donate. I literally have close to 1ooo comics. The shipping would cost a small fortune though. Any suggestions on how to circumvent that cost e-mail me @ jameshalcomb@yahoo.com and I will get them to you ASAP.

    • The shipping is the main problem we’ve run into. Comics way a ton. Your best bet is probably shipping them USPS Media Rate, or asking UPS of Fed Ex if they have any sort of special disaster relief rate (I honestly don’t know if there even is such a thing)

    Hi –

Such a great idea that I am collecting comics and comic based colouring books to send over from Brisbane Australia. Will send via a friend in Kansas to ensure that they get to shelters that most need them. We had our fair share of natural disasters in Queensland this year, but nothing like what you are going through.

Good luck to you all xxx

  13. Jamie says:

I’ve been looking for a place to donate three long boxes of comics I’ve had sitting around, and this is perfect. I know they’ll go to good use. I’m going to get them out in the week ahead.

    • Thanks so much. I know I’ve said this a million times already, but I really am in awe at how much people are getting behind this project. It’s really, really great.

Hey, how’s ‘comic relief’ going? Get any books in this weekend?

    das

    • Hey, Das.

So far we’ve received a couple of boxes from Missouri and New Jersey. Also, a local comic dealer brought in 3 long boxes of books. We’re going to start into the distribution side of things today.

Since tomorrows a holiday, the post won’t be running. Come Tuesday though, I’ve got a feeling we’re going to get tons of books.

Thanks to everyone who has sent books or support, and keep ’em coming. We’ll make sure that every book we receive makes it into the hands of someone who needs it.

      • dasNdanger says:

I hope you’ll be able to share some stories with us about the distribution…would love to hear how it all works out! IF parents are okay with it, a few pictures of the kids receiving the books would be great, too. Any local news agencies following this? Someone should – just seems like a good story to cover.

        My best to you all!

        das

  21. Chelsea says:

Hey, I got probably a dumb question for ya, I was just wondering if things like Green Arrow would be kid friendly enough? It seems fine, but I just wanted to make sure. Thanks!

    • We’ve gotten enough response that we’ll be dividing the books up into age brackets before we take them to the shelters. Something like Green Arrow probably is safe for all ages, but it may go into the “Teen Friendly” pile, just to be safe. Thanks.

  22. Will be sending 80 books of The Lunar Antics comic books Tuesday from the warehouse in Ohio. They are absolutely suitable for all ages–although older people who have life experience will see more irony! Hope this helps to relieve the boredom in the shelters.

I hope I can give back a little to this wonderful country of what I received when my city was attacked in September of 2001.

    Hi

I am a Chinese guy in Arkansas. Feel sorry for the people from Joplin, especially for the kids there.

I got twenty comic books or so. Most of them are Naruto’s from it series (Not the whole). They are in very good conditions. Is it fine to send them to you?

Thanks and God bless all the people there and the people to work helping them.

  24. denise says:

Do you accept all books? or just comics?

  25. Just mailed a package of children’s books, you should receive them by Thursday!

  26. Patrick Cainam says:

Howdy! Just found out about this today. Are you still accepting comics to be sent in?

  27. Jason Leibert says:

Mailed about 40lbs of comics I’ve been collecting and moving around over the last twenty years or so. I hope you can make use of them.

  28. Bob Flynn says:

Hi there! I have 50 copies of Heeby Jeeby Comix (for kids—definitely all ages) to donate—issues #1 and #2. I can almost guarantee they will put a smile on their faces 🙂 So sorry to hear of everyone’s losses. I would love to help.
